Germany is a cyclist's paradise. High-quality E-bikes are everywhere. But as the value of bikes grows, so does the risk. In my digital consulting, I'll show you why a specialized E-Bike Insurance is far more than just theft protection and why your household insurance often isn't enough.
Klaus's Story: The Expensive Trip to the Bakery
Let me tell you Klaus's story. Klaus, a fit retiree, fulfilled a dream last year: a sleek E-bike for 4,500 euros. "I can get anywhere with it, Daniel," he told me proudly. He had the bike insured through his household insurance—or so he thought.
One Saturday morning, he stopped briefly at a bakery. The bike was secured with a high-quality lock, and Klaus was only in the shop for five minutes. When he came back, the bike was gone. Professionals at work.
The shock came when reporting the claim: His household insurance had a so-called "night-time clause" (the bike was gone during the day, but the contract was ancient) and the compensation sum for bicycles was limited to 500 euros. Klaus was left with a 4,000 euro loss. "I thought a bike is a bike," he told me frustrated. Furthermore, the household insurance would never have paid if Klaus had fallen and the expensive battery had suffered a defect. Today, Klaus rides a new E-bike—this time with full comprehensive insurance that I arranged for him. He pays less than 10 euros a month and knows: no matter what happens, he gets the full replacement value.
Why Household Insurance Usually Isn't Enough for Expats in Germany
Many clients tell me: "My bike is included in my household policy." This is often true, but the protection is full of gaps:
- Limited Sums: Often, bikes are only insured up to 1% or 2% of the sum insured. For a 4,000 euro bike, this isn't nearly enough.
- Only Theft: Household insurance only pays for theft. What about vandalism, accidental damage, or wear and tear?
- Away-from-Home Protection: Many old contracts don't pay if the bike is stolen outside your own four walls, or only under strict conditions.
What E-Bike Comprehensive Insurance Really Provides
In my neutral digital consulting, I recommend policies that protect your bike like a car. This includes:
- Theft & Robbery: Including parts like the battery or the on-board computer.
- Vandalism: If someone maliciously damages your bike.
- Accidental Damage: You fall on a cycle path? The insurance pays for the repair.
- Battery Defects: Protection against short circuits, moisture, or overvoltage during charging.
- Wear & Tear: Top policies even cover the costs for worn brakes or tires (after a certain waiting period).
- Pick-up Service: If you get stranded, you and your bike will be collected.
What to Look for When Signing Up
As your broker, I compare the conditions carefully. We pay special attention to these details:
New Value Compensation: Do you still get the full purchase price back after three years, or only the current value? I always recommend new value.
Lock Requirements: Some insurers specify locks from a certain price (e.g., at least 50 euros). We'll find a provider that fits your existing lock.
Scope of Application: Are you only protected in Germany or also on holiday in the Netherlands or Italy? My recommendations usually offer worldwide protection.
